Best Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioner & Heat Pump

In this article we’re going to talk about some of the things that people look for when they decide to purchase a ductless mini split system. There’s three main things to consider. The first being the SEER rating. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio – we will go into more detail on this later in the article but we just wanted to call it out now. The another thing to look for is AHRI certification. This is an ENERGY STAR certifying body that evaluates heating and cooling machinery for meeting certain efficiency standards – more on this later as well. The last, and possibly most important consideration is making sure that the mini split system is appropriately-sized for the area that you want to heat and cool.

Three of the top brands for ductless mini split air conditioners and heat pumps are Pioneer, Senville and Air-Con. We will be using these three brands and some of their models as examples throughout this article. It’s important to be aware of where companies will ship products to when you’re buying one of these systems. Air-Con and Pioneer will ship within the United States and Senville will ship to Canada.

SEER Rating

SEER is seasonal energy efficiency ratio. It is an easy way to compare between mini split systems that have different voltages, BTUs and designs for different sized rooms. The higher the SEER the more efficient the system. Some other factors like how many square feet the mini split can heat or cool may be more important for you. For more information about SEER and how it is calculated, check out this Wikipedia article. As you consider different mini split heat pumps to keep you warm through the winter the SEER rating is an important thing to be aware of. Having a high SEER rating is important it you want to keep your energy bills as low as possible. Any rating above 20 is on the high end of the efficiency scale.

Most Senville and Air-Con products will have see ratings over 20. Pioneer mini split systems generally have SEER ratings below 20 and there’s a reason for this. Senville and Air-Con use condensers that operate at higher pressures and are able to take advantage of some of the efficiency that comes from using a newer refrigerant. This newer refrigerant is R410a. R410a replaces the old R22 refrigerant. R22 is now illegal because it depletes the ozone so all new air conditioners and heat pumps operate off of newer refrigerants.

Pioneer mini split systems generally have the lower SEER rating because they’re capable of operating with the R22 and the R410a refrigerants in them. Some people will still choose to use Pioneer mini split systems with R410a refrigerant simply because Pioneers a pretty well-established brand. They like knowing that the company they’re buying from has been around for a long time. We have included a search bar in the ad below to help you find relevant products based on the content of this page.

AHRI Certified

AHRI certification is another important thing to look for when you consider different heat pump systems for your heating and cooling needs. AHRI stands for Air-conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Institute. They have been recognized by the ENERGY STAR program as a certifying body. The AHRI is able to certify appliances and machines as being in compliance with efficiency standards. The AHRI certification is recognized by agencies in the United States and Canada, you can read more about it here if you like. AHRI certification is another way to compare between mini split heating and cooling systems. We recommend using this as a pass-fail test, meaning if the mini split does not have the certification, do not consider purchasing it.

All three brands that we talk about in this article have gone through the trouble of getting their mini-split systems certified by the AHRI. This is a good indicator that the company is committed to building quality products and supplying their customers with machinery they can depend on.

The last thing we mentioned in the beginning of this article was making sure that your mini split heat pump and air conditioner is appropriately-sized for the area you want to heat and cool. This is a pretty simple process since manufacturers will provide this information in their advertisements. Again we purposely selected the three brands because they all provide product lines that are work in a range of different sized rooms.

Best Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioner & Heat Pump

Hopefully we’ve provided you with enough information to get you started on deciding which mini split heat pump and air conditioner is right for you. Just to reinforce the points we made earlier in the article – the Pioneer is a little bit more well-established and you probably have some familiarity with that brand. Then the Air-Con and Senville brands both are more efficient, in general, than Pioneers mini-split models are.

Electric Fireplace vs Baseboard Heater

There are some pretty easy to see differences between electric fireplaces and baseboard heaters. We’ll go over some of those later in the article. Right up front we go over one of the more important but least obvious is how efficient they are.

Efficient Heaters

The baseboard heater has the potential to be more efficient for two reasons:

First, you can install the baseboard heater directly under a window. In fact they are almost always installed here. This is because windows are the least insulated part of a home. They cause the most heat loss. Placing a heater underneath the window helps keep the temperature in that room more stable. Basically, you can put to most heat where the room is the coldest.

Baseboard heaters can be more efficient for another reason too. Some electric baseboard heaters are hydronic heaters. This means they heat up a liquid, usually oil, which then transfers heat to the surrounding air. The liquid retains heat and continues to warm the air even after the unit has stopped drawing electricity. Think about boiling a pot of water on the stove. Even after you turn the burner off the water remains hot for a long time. The same thing happens to the liquid inside a hydronic baseboard heater. We have included a search bar in the ad below to help you find relevant products based on the content of this page.

Hydronic heater considerations

There is a downside to using a hydronic heater though. When the heater first turns on, it can take longer for it to provide heat. This is really only an issue if you are turning the heater on in a very cold room. For example, a hydronic heater is probably not the best choice for a shed or separate garage where you occasionally work. In this scenario you might keep the shed around 50 degrees Fahrenheit most of the time and then increase it to 70 or so when you are working. An indoor safe propane heater would probably be a better choice then. For a home however, the temperature will remain fairly consistent. A hydronic heater that warms up more slowly and is more efficient is a good choice.

Other differences: electric fireplaces vs baseboard heaters

Some electric fireplaces come with cool touch technology. The cool touch feature is very important if you have small children in the house. Baseboard heaters do have guards in place to help reduce the chances of burns and they do a good job.

Electric fireplaces almost always have a more appealing look to them. They also come in a variety of styles. Conversely, baseboard heaters are discreet and have the potential to take up less space. If space is a concern it may be worth checking out an entertainment center style electric fireplace. Since it serves two functions, it can cut down on the amount of furniture in your living room.

Similarities between the two

Both types of heater can be permanently installed or portable.

240V baseboard heaters must be permanently installed by a qualified professional. If you want to be able to plug your baseboard heater into an outlet on the wall, look for one that is 120V.

Some electric fireplaces are standalone appliances that can easily be moved around. Others are actual inserts installed into the wall like a wood burning fireplace.

Electric Fireplace vs Baseboard Heater

We discussed a number of different situations where and electric fireplace or baseboard heater would be a better choice. Each type of appliance has a unique set of advantages that makes it better depending on where you intend to use it. Duraflame makes some of the best electric fireplaces on the marketplace today, so we recommend taking a look at their models first.

If you think of anything we may have missed in comparing these two types of heaters, feel free to leave a comment in the section below. Thanks!

Hydronic Electric Baseboard Heaters vs Standard

Hydronic Electric Baseboard Heaters vs Standard

In the first part of this article we’ll go over a few differences between hydronic and standard electric baseboard heaters. After that we have an extensive list of important features to look for in a baseboard heater. Luckily these features can be found on both kinds of heaters.

Advantages of Hydronic Baseboard Heaters

The biggest advantage hydronic heaters have is higher efficiency and lower costs. They apply electricity to a liquid, causing it to heat up. Once the liquid reaches the appropriate temperature it begins heating the air in the room. The heated liquid stays warm even after the electricity shuts off. This is just like boiling water on the stove. Even after turning off the burner the water remains hot for a long time.

Advantages of Standard Baseboard Heaters

Standard electric baseboard heaters do not have the liquid heating element, so they retain heat for a much shorter period of time. This leads to more cycles of the appliance of turning on and off. Generally, the start up period is the more energy intensive time for a machine. However, standard electric heaters begin heating the room much faster than a hydronic system.

Our recommendation for the best type of Baseboard Heater

In most instances the heater will not be raising the temperature in a freezing room. Because of this, the longer warm up time of hydronic baseboard heaters is less of a disadvantage. The increased efficiency and energy cost savings offered by hydronic heaters far outweighs the few minutes longer it may take to start feeling heat. We have included a search bar in the ad below to help you find relevant products based on the content of this page.

Similarities between hydronic and standard Baseboard Heaters

Regardless of the type of baseboard heater you decide to purchase, be sure to look for one that has these two standard safety features

  • Automatic overheat shut off – this will turn the heater off in case something is in the way of the heated air and causes the unit to become too hot.
  • Tip over switch – this feature will automatically turn off the power to the heater if it is knocked over. A carpet or other floor covering could easily catch fire without this safety measure.

Both types of baseboard heaters come in 120V and 240V versions.

  • 120V models can be plugged directly into an outlet in the wall. If you plan to use the heater seasonally or need to move it between rooms or buildings you need a 120V version.
  • 240V models need to be wired into the wall. A certified professional will need to install 240V units. While it is more expensive and permanent this kind of set up looks very clean and modern. The unit will also likely be secured to the wall. Tipping over a unit like this is no longer a concern.

Standard and hydronic heaters both have models with optional thermostats that come as part of the unit. They can also be used in conjunction with separately sold thermostats. Honeywell makes a great lineup of thermostats for exactly this purpose. Due to the nature of the way the thermostat functions, you do not necessarily need to purchase a Honeywell baseboard heater. Best Mini Split Heat Pump for Cold Weather

There are a lot of different numbers and measurements to consider when looking for the best mini split system for heating in cold weather. In the first part of this article we talk about a few of these numbers. Later we go over two very similar mini split heat pump product lines. The first one, Air-Con, is available in the United States and the second brand, Senville, can be purchased and shipped in Canada. Both of these brands are incredibly efficient and have SEER ratings over 20. The last part of the article is dedicated to the Pioneer Ductless Wall Mount Mini Split System.

Air-Con Ductless Mini Split Heat Pumps

Air-Con has an extensive lineup of ductless heating and cooling systems. All the units we found in our research use GMCC Toshiba compressors. These are some of the most efficient and reliable compressors on the market today. They also use the R-410A refrigerant which is important for two reasons:

  1. R-410A refrigerant contributes to higher SEER ratings that keep your energy costs lower
  2. R-410A refrigerant does not deplete the ozone. This means you can expect to be able to recharge your mini split without worrying about the refrigerant being phased out due to environmental concerns. This phase out process happened with ozone depleting refrigerants.

We have included a search bar in the ad below to help you find relevant products based on the content of this page.

Senville AURA

Senville makes mini split systems available in Canada. All of their units in the AURA series have a SEER rating over 20. The smallest unit at 9,000 BTUs is rated for a space up to 500 square feet. Their large 24,000 BTU mini split is rated for up to 1,500 square feet and still has a SEER rating of 20. This is a very efficient and powerful heating and cooling system. The high SEER rating is in part due to the R-410A refrigerant we discussed earlier in the article.

Senville AURA units are able to provide heat all the way down to -22 degrees Fahrenheit.

Pioneer Air Conditioner & Heat Pumps

Pioneer’s more popular units range in SEER rating from 16 up to 18. The WYS030-17 is the most efficient model with the 18 SEER rating. This is their second largest model with a recommended heating and cooling area of up to 1,100 square feet.

Pioneer designs some of their mini split systems with auxiliary electric heaters. There heaters are part of the outdoor portion of the unit and allow the units to provide optimal heat in temperatures as low as 5 degrees Farenheight. The units can still provide heat in colder outdoor temperatures. However, automatic safety measures to protect the unit will kick in and reduce the efficiency of the unit.

This model is the latest of mini-split AC and heat-pump systems without ducting that has been launched by Pioneer. The full system consists of the indoor unit and the compressor which is installed outdoors. The digital remote control allows you to select any of the four modes of operation; heating, cooling, ventilation or dehumidification.
In addition to this, an onboard computer provides automatic operation. The timer feature allows you to stop or start the system at particular times. The night-mode feature is especially useful. It changes the temperature automatically at night when you may want your room cooler.
In the event of a power outage the auto-restart feature uses the data in its memory to restart the system with the same settings.

It is also possible to remotely control and monitor this system through Wi-fi. This is a great feature to have if you are using this mini split heat pump to keep an outbuilding warm during the winter to prevent damage from frozen pipes.

This product from Pioneer with the latest technological developments has been designed to provide the best in performance, efficiency and comfort. The model WYS series with the 17 SEER rating used for a single zone in a residential area or commercial space.

Best Space Heater for a Large Room

Buring log

Here’s a quick article on space heaters for large rooms. We specifically picked the DFI-5010-01 as the best space heater for large rooms for several reasons. Ability to heat a large room, up to 1,000 square feet is an obvious reason. It also has a remote and is child and pet safe. Click here to jump down to the product review for the Duraflame DFI-5010-01.

Space heaters are the most energy efficient devices when it comes to supplementing the heat produced by a source which is not adequate or in the case when installing or operating a system for providing centrally heated air becomes too expensive. Selecting a good space heater can be of great importance for cold countries because during winters space heaters consume a significant part of the electricity bill and an essential device in the household.

Usage of a space heater can be quite cheap for warming a small space or room. Additionally, their efficiency is almost 100 percent as there is no loss of heat due to any combustion or due to the damage caused by any ducting. Nearly the whole heat generated by space heaters is confined to the room.

Types of Space Heaters

Heaters operating on fuel such as propane or kerosene are great when used for industrial workplaces as they require very little electricity or sometimes none at all. But they can cause some safety hazards when used in places which have insufficient ventilation.

Space heaters are most suitable for home usage. A large number of space heaters use convection currents for heating a room. Cheap portable space heaters using electric power can be used to supplement the heating effect combined with central systems.

Some of the heaters using electricity also use infrared radiation to warm the room just like the sun which uses infrared rays to increase the temperature of the earth. The energy efficiency of such type of heaters is best as they warm only things that are in their vicinity. They provide transference of heat directly to the people occupying the room and not all over the place. Their beams can be precisely directed to warm a room or a particular area very fast.

Also, just like space heaters using electricity, radiation heaters using oil as a fuel are the best for supplementing an inadequate system used for central heating. They provide noiseless operation, perfect safety, high efficiency and optimum temperature control.

Space heaters used in heating large rooms should not pose any safety hazards to pets and children by maintaining an outer surface which should feel cold when touched. They should also have an automatic shutdown feature to avoid causing fires due to any overheating.

The process of heating by infrared rays maintains the level of humidity in a room which is important as other types of heating can make the air in the place dry. A remote control becomes additionally handy when the room is a bit large.

Saving Energy with Space Heaters

When you use any of the choices given above, you can save a lot of money on your energy bills while keeping your living area and your home comfortably warm.

The following tips can help you save more money:

Select a heater that has a timer or thermostatic control. You can prevent overheating and the wastage of energy in this way. Take the help of a professional person when installing the thermostat control if you are not familiar with the electrical connections.

Buy a heater which can heat your room adequately. Take care of the wattage and avoid buying an oversized heater. Considering a ratio of 10:1 between required wattage to the square feet to be heated, a space heater with a rating of 120 volts and 1500 watts should be sufficient for an area of 150 sq. Ft. with proper insulation, while a heater with a rating of 5000 watts should be enough for an area of about 400 sq. ft.

Always keep the space heater at its lowest setting and powered off when you are not present in the room or using it. It can use up a lot of energy if left in working condition.

The doors and windows should be kept closed to keep the loss of heat to the bare minimum and to keep the heating effect within its maximum limit. More energy is consumed if the heater is powered on and switched off frequently.

Selection of the best space heater depends on various factors as the purpose for which it is being used, the size of the room to be heated and the initial room temperatures. Generally speaking, heaters using oil or heating panels can provide a sure and steady rise of temperature in a room, while heaters using convection currents formed with the help of fans can raise the temperature of the room at a rapid rate.

Review of the Duraflame DFI 5010-01

The DFI 5010-01 has a ton of great features. The first thing to note is that the last digit of the product changes with the color. The 01 in this case means that is the number for the black finish. Here’s a list of all the product codes and colors:

Five different finishes

  • Black – 01
  • Bronze – 02
  • Cinnamon – 03
  • Cream – 04
  • French Grey – 05

The heater produces up to 5,200 BTU which will provide supplemental heat for up to a 1,000 square foot area. It operates off infrared heat. This means the heater won’t dry out the air in the space that it’s heating. That is a great thing to have in the winter. Outside air is already very dry and stealing precious moisture from your skin and airways.

The 3D flame effect is only for looks. The flames can operate at 5 different brightness levels independently of the amount of heat produced.

It has a cool touch exterior that makes it safe for children and pets to be around. The adjustable thermostat lets you decide the temperature of your room. If you only want the space heater to run for a certain amount of time, you can set it for 30 minutes up to 9 hours. There’s also a convenient remote control so you can easily change the way the heater is working from a distance. Since this is an electric heater there is no additional installation required like adding an exhaust pipe or routing fuel lines.

Best Space Heater for a Garage

Space heaters for your garage

Garage heaters add a lot of comfort to your home in the winter. By keeping your car warm they help the engine reach operating temperature faster when you start driving. It also keeps your car comfortable when you get in it. They are easy to install, clean, maintain and to store when not in use in offseason.

There are many types and designs of garage heaters, but the common ones are:

Electrical space heaters – these generally do not require any complex installation and just plug into the wall.

Propane space heaters – propane is capable of burning very cleanly. Because of this there are propane space heaters that are approved for use indoors like the Mr. Heater F232000 MH9BX Buddy 4,000-9,000-BTU Indoor-Safe Portable Radiant Heater. Since this model is portable you can use it in sheds or garages that have limited outlets. If you are using power tools propane heaters offer even better advantages by reducing the electrical load. This is our top pick based on how easy it is to use and how much heat it puts out.

Piped gas space heaters and wood burners – as the name implies these are not entirely clean burning and will need an exterior vent to get smoke out of the building. Since they require an exhaust port they also lose the convenience of being portable. The advantage they do offer is that they can put out significant heat that it may be hard to find in portable versions.
