Best Electric Griddle for Pancakes

Pancake griddles make weekend breakfasts a lot more manageable. If you get the right griddle cooking six or eight pancakes at a time is a very real possibility. Clean up is also a lot easier if you have a good pancake griddle that is designed well. In this article we talk about some of the benefits to using a griddle instead of a pan to cook pancakes. We also give some recommendations on a few griddles with unique features that will save you time and make breakfast a fun part of your day.

Electric Griddle vs Stove Top

If you are already making pancakes in a frying pan, check out this short list of reasons to flip to the other side:

  • An electric griddle has a much bigger cooking surface than a frying pan. This means more pancakes in less time.
  • Griddles are well know for their ability to heat evenly. Even heat is a big advantage when you are flipping eight different pancakes. You can have peace of mind that each pancake will be consistently golden brown all the way across.
  • Temperature control is super easy. Good electric griddle have temperature markings on them so you can set it to exactly what you need. Having this level of control is great if you cook with different types of batter.
  • In addition to pancakes you can use your griddle for large batches of hamburgers or bacon. We use ours to heat up tortillas rather than waiting for the oven to pre-heat.

Best Rated Indoor Electric Grill

grilled meats and vegetables

The tastes of summer are the mouth-watering char of a perfectly grilled ear of corn, a steak and possibly a potato or two. Celebrate the end of heat-pump and sweater weather with a little barbecue! Unfortunately, the tastes of summer are sometimes limited by bugs, rain, lightning or a lack of outdoor space.

Don’t let little setbacks keep you from the seductive flavors of smoke and spice. An indoor grill is the answer. The best indoor electric grill gives you all the benefits of your big barbecue in a modern and convenient package.

Read on to learn more about getting the fullest flavor from your food, even when you grill indoors.

Electric Grill Features You Need

  • Powerful heat recovery
  • Easy to read temperature gauge
  • Near 500F sear
  • Easy to clean
  • Soft open/close/floating hinge
  • Size
  • Useful cord length

Your grill needs to have enough power to recover heat quickly after loading it with food. Every time you open it up to flip food over or check for doneness, you lose heat. You want fast recovery for best crunch and texture.

Better grills have a accurate indicator light or temperature gauge to let you know when the grill is ready to cook. More advanced versions have a high heat sear and then an adjustable thermostat to allow slow, even cooking.

Cleaning time shouldn’t exceed the cooking times though! You want removable grills and plates for easy cleanup. Cleaning sticky sauces from cracks and crevices is no fun. Removable plates mean a quick wash in the sink or dishwasher to return things to the ready.

Open Up!

Depending on the type of indoor electric grill you choose, you want to have the proper hinges to allow contact between the food and upper plate if a contact grill. If an ordinary indirect heat grill, you want hinges that do not collect food and that are adequate to hold the lid away from walls and tabletops.

Size matters. if you have a family of five, your needs are different from a single person. What is the largest surface area you will need?

Don’t forget the electrical cord. If you plan on tabletop grilling, an adequate cord length is a consideration. Some grills come with very short cords to prevent accidents. You may want to check the distance between your nearest outlet and the place you want to use your grill.

Steak, Panini or Bulgogi?

The best grill for your needs depends on what you plan on cooking. If your desire lies in a juicy filet mignon, your first priority is a grill that offers high heat for searing. Sandwich lovers need easy clean plates and adjustable thermostats to make their Cuban pressed sandwiches crunch.

How many people do you need to serve at once? If you are cooking Korean barbecue for a family, you need a fairly large grill space, but if you cook steaks one at a time, you can go with a much smaller grill.

Think about storage. Unless you would like your grill as part of your permanent decor, you want something compact enough for your storage space. Grills come in rectangle, oval and circular profiles. Some store vertically, others require their own cart.

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes

All of the indoor grills listed are smokeless/fumeless. That does not mean that the food itself will not caramelize and burn. Plan on cooking with your extractor fan on and windows open to avoid visits by the fire brigade. Cooking can affect your indoor air quality.

If you have smart neighbors or hungry pets, they will come running when they smell you grilling a juicy steak.

Indoor grills can get messy with spattered juices and grease. Some grills also get very hot and can discolor countertops and cabinets. Steam and rising grease can stain painted surfaces. A cover that allows you to limit mess is a good feature.

Watch out for covers with vents. You don’t want steamed food flavor rather than the char of outdoor grilled foods.

In no order, some of best multi-purpose indoor grills are listed.

Chill With an Indoor Grill

Condo dwellers who live with very strict rules about grilling will probably appreciate the Hamilton Beach 25361 grill. This all-purpose kitchen grill has a 450F sear to lock in flavor. It is useful for burgers, steaks, and fajitas, although the grill marks aren’t dark.

It has a splatter-proof lid to keep food mess to a minimum, but it is not a contact grill. Closing the lid tends to steam, rather than grill the food. The grill plate is removable for easy cleanup.

Multi-Tasking Pot

If you are a fan of multi-tasking appliances this small steamer, slow-cooker and grill heats up to 450F. It has a dial adjustable thermostat for precise heat control and an easy clean grill plate. It has a built-in pour spout for collected liquids and fats. The Aroma SuperPot ASP-137 Grillet is the smallest of the recommended indoor grills, with a 10″ diameter.

This small appliance takes up little room and simulates the round grill surface of a bigger barbecue.

Big Surface, Easy Cleanup

The Delonghi BG24 Perfecto Indoor Grill is a perfect combination of function and convenience. It gets hot enough for a good sear and has a clear lid to allow you to keep an eye on your cooking without constantly opening it up. This allows you to have precision temperature control.

It has fast temperature recovery for those critical grill marks and an easy clean drip tray for nearly smokeless cooking. Like all Delonghi products, it has excellent marks for durability and safety.

Bold Black Sear Marks

Not all indoor grills can heat to a high enough temperature to sear red meat, but this isn’t the case with the Cuisinart GR-300WS. Once your grill heats, you can prepare your steak in a quick six minutes. This grill also doubles a panini press.

Set your preferred temperature, pre-heat and begin cooking. How simple is that? The lid also works as a cooking surface with the top and bottom heat contact surfaces.

Cuisinart comes with easy to clean features. All grease from cooking drains underneath the cooking grills for easy cleanup. Surfaces are nonstick, avoiding the crusted grease buildup common on many grills.

The grill can be used on a tabletop or on its stand, although tabletop use requires a protected surface. The exterior of the machine can reach 150F.

Breville Boosts Power

Breville’s powerful BGR820XL can cook your breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It can sear up to 450F. There isn’t much this grill can’t cook. It opens partway for panini mode or all the way for a double-sided grill mode. It has 6 different adjustable height selections and plate tilts for perfect grilling. Grease quickly drains to the easy clean drip pan.

It has three settings. Low heat, a medium sandwich-making setting, and high heat/searing. The grill wins style points for its good-looking exterior. Looks are important if you plan on keeping this appliance on the countertop. Plan on using this multi-tasker often!

T-Fal Delivers High Tech

The T-Fal GC702 model is a tiny package just bursting with fancy tech. It includes sensors to adjust the grilling cycle based on the thickness of the food. It has special presets for thawing and cooking food from frozen.

Automatic cooking of sausage, red meat, fish, and poultry without fuss make this a no-brainer for an apartment dweller or college student. It has easy to remove and clean parts and a small footprint for easy storage.

Low Cost Tabletop Grill

The Oster Titanium-Infused DuraCeramic 2-in-1 Panini Maker and Grill is a tiny powerhouse appliance. Despite its low price, it includes a high-quality, durable ceramic nonstick coating. No peel off or bubbling like less expensive finishes. It easily wipes clean with a damp cloth after use.

Teflon can give off toxic fumes when used for high heat applications, but the Durastick ceramic stays in place. This grill can be opened flat for a bigger cook surface or folded for a panini press. It includes removable drip cups and variable heating.

Best Dehumidifer for Gun Safe

It is very important to keep humidity out of your gun safe. If you live in a very humid environment this is a real challenge. Hunting season in colder climates can also exposure guns to humidity. When you come back in from the winter weather the ice cold metal components become saturated with condensation.

This is the same idea of a cold beverage on a summer day. The humidity naturally in the air comes into contact with something cold and condenses. It is pretty easy to wipe this water off the outside of your hunting rifle. But what about the trigger housing and lower receiver? There are a lot of small spaces that are difficult to reach with a cloth or Q-tip.

An easy way to solve this is keeping a desiccant dehumidifier in your gun safe. While you store your guns for the night the dehumidifier will do it’s work. The extra dry air inside the safe turbocharge the evaporation process. The extra water will be removed before it can do any damage or rust metal components.

We recommend the Eva-Dry Renewable E-333 Wireless Mini Dehumidifier to do the job of dehumidifying your gun safe for several reasons. First and foremost is affordability and the fact that you can recharge it without purchasing additional parts. It’s small size and cordless operation also make it a clear winner. Feel free to keep reading for a more in depth review below, or click through to Amazon to see this and other cordless desiccant dehumidifiers.

The presence of extra humidity in places such as safes, closets, bathrooms, under kitchen sinks, inside boats, in RVs and so on, can cause nightmares. This excessive humidity can be taken care of if you use the E-333 dehumidifier.

By using the “Eva-Dry Renewable E-333 Wireless Mini Dehumidifier”, you can save energy as it does not operate on either electric power or on a battery. Though it is not suitable for large areas, it is ideal for small places like bathrooms and closets where there are chances of growth of mildew and molds.

Mode of operation:

The E-333 dehumidifier does not need electric power or batteries but works on a technology that requires replaceable silica gel. The dehumidifier can quietly absorb all the moisture in an area efficiently for an area up to 333 cubic ft. The Silica gel color can be seen in a small window, to assess how much moisture that has been absorbed by crystals.

Note: The unit does not have any indicator that lights up, and only the color of the beads have to be checked regularly. Within two to four weeks, depending on the amount of moisture present, the color of the silica gel beads will change to green when they have absorbed moisture to their full capacity of 4 to 6 ounces. After this happens, the dehumidifier has to be kept in a well-ventilated location for 8 hours to 10 hours to allow the crystals to lose the moisture and revert to their orange color. They can now be used repeatedly and for up to 10 years.

Previously the color of the crystals used was blue which used to change to pink when they became wet. The model E-333 humidifier is effective for small spaces. Remember that the place beside an open window in a large room or an area outside the house is the best place for allowing the humidifier to release the moisture into the air.

No need to buy fresh beads or cleaning up after a spill!

There is no chance of water spilling out, even when the E-333 has absorbed moisture to its full capacity. It can retain all the moisture till the beads are renewed by allowing the absorbed moisture to evaporate. Thus, costly refills can be avoided and the dehumidifier with warranty coverage of 5 years can repeatedly be used for ten years.

Advantages of the E-333 dehumidifier are:

It is non-toxic
It can be renewed and used for ten years
Works silently
No danger to children and pets
No spills and no mess
Can work excellently for an area measuring 333 cft.

Best Furnace Filter for Allergies

Allergy season is upon us!

Or is it?

The allergens you are exposed to at home are related to the pollen and mold count outdoors. When you are outside or at work you mostly need to rely on medication to help you make it through the day.

However, your home is its very own ecosystem when it comes to allergens. Having the right furnace filter and keeping up on the maintenance of your ventilation system is a big part of managing allergy symptoms at home.

This page provides an overview of everything you need to know to find the right furnace filter to help manage your allergy symptoms. Furnace filters help reduce your exposure to indoor allergens when the filter captures these airborne particles out of the air.

You may already familiar with the relevant information to make an informed choice about purchasing a furnace filter. If that is the case, you can skip ahead to our top furnace filter picks with MPRs over 1500 or MERVs 13 and higher by clicking here.

Home Furnace Filters

Furnace filters are designed to keep your ductwork free from buildup and obstructions. Over time your furnace filter captures dust and other debris from the air like it is supposed to. The more the filter captures, the harder it is to push air through it. This means it is important to regularly check and maintain your furnace filter.

Different furnace filter manufacturers have different recommended replacement timelines. This can also be different from style to style. Knowing how often you will need to replace your filter has a big impact when estimating the annual cost of using a certain type of furnace filter.

Another thing to consider is the MERV or MPR rating. MPR stands for Microparticle Performance Rating. MERV is an abbreviation for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. There are long lists of technical aspects associated with each of these.

What is the difference between MPR and MERV?

They are the same thing. Both of these abbreviations are talking about how efficient a filter is at removing particles of a certain diameter from the air. MPR was coined by the company 3M and MERV was defined by American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers or ASHRAE.
Furnace Filter Ratings and Allergies

For the purposes of allergy relief it is enough to know that the furnace filter requires a minimum MPR of 1000 or a minimum MERV of 11. Later on in this article we recommend higher MPRs or MERVs than these two numbers. This is because at slightly higher ratings you get closer to 100% capture of allergens. Much higher will not produce significant changes in your indoor air quality.

Check out the section below for a guide.

What allergens can a furnace filter help with?

A filter with an MPR of 1,000 like the Filtrete Micro Allergen can be expected to filter out the following airborne particles and allergens:

  • Lint and Household Dust
  • Dust Mite Debris
  • Mold Spores
  • Pollen
  • Pet Dander
  • Smoke and Smog

This is very close to what a MERV 12 filter can do. The only difference is that a MERV 12 filter is not rated to remove smoke and smog from the air.

Filters with an MPR of 1550 like the Filtrete Healthy Living Ultra Allergen filter remove the items listed above. They also capture:
Cough and Sneeze particles

To remove proplet nuceli, or sneeze droplets, from the air you will need a filter rated MERV 13 or higher. If removing the bacteria from the air in your home is a necessity then look for a MERV 15.

Interestingly, if you check out this chart it shows a requirement of MERV 19 to remove unattached viruses from the air. MERV 19 is much higher than the MPR 1550 we saw in the Filtrete example above. The difference is that a MERV 19 will remove all the viruses while the MPR 1550 is able to remove some but not all.

If you use a filter with a MERV that is too low it may not even be filtering out what you expect it to. As an allergy sufferer this is especially important to know. For general indoor air quality a MERV of 9 – 12 is fine, but if you need some heavy duty allergy relief we suggest something in the 13+ range.

It can get tough keeping track of expenses and MERVs and even the correct sizing of your furnace filter. Check out the information below for an easy to use guide that sorts a huge amount of information about furnace filters and allergies.

Washable and Electrostatic Furnace Filters

A quick note on washable filters and electrostatic filters. We generally do not recommend washable furnace filters. There is nothing wrong with a washable filter, it might even save you money in the long run. However, they will not filter as well because they have lower MPR and MERVs. If you are looking for allergy relief in a furnace filter you will not find it in a washable filter.

Electrostatic filters are also something you may come across while searching for a new furnace filter. There is nothing wrong with electrostatic filters. But, be aware of the MPR or MERV. It does not matter what features or functions the filter has, it must have a high enough MPR or MERV to filter out allergens.

How we do our reviews

The reviews below will plainly list out the following:

  • The MPR or MERV of the filter. This can be difficult to find depending on the furnace filter manufacturer. To keep things simple we will only list MPRs over 1500 or MERVs 13 and higher. Either of these values will filter all common allergens including:
    • Mold
    • Pollen
    • Dust mites
    • Pet dander
    • Smoke
    • Dust
    • Bacteria
    • Sneeze or cough droplets
  • The actual size of the filter. This rarely matches the advertised size of the filter.
  • The annual cost of using this type of filter. When the manufacturer give a range of replacing the filter every 6 to 12 months we let you know.

So let’s get to it! Below is a selection of our picks for the top furnace filters for allergies on the market.

The Best Furnace FIlters for Allergies: A Review

We selected a single furnace filter from each of the manufacturers listed below. Filters in the same series will have the same characteristics. For example, all Filtrete Healthy Living Ultra Allergen air filters will be MPR 1550 even though they may come in different sizes to fit different furnaces.

Dehumidifiers for allergies? – Everyone knows that air purifiers are great for removing allergens from the air. But what about a dehumidifier? They help a lot when managing mold and dust mite populations.

Best Dehumidifier for Basement Mold

It can be hard to treat mold in your basement. Since there is less air circulation and generally cooler temperatures, it makes a good opportunity for pockets of moisture to build up. Things like mold and other fungi can take hold in these moist areas. Keeping your basement dry is an important part of removing and keeping mold out of your basement. This is especially important if you have a finished basement and a bathroom or shower installed.

We go over a list of different features that make desiccant dehumidifiers the best ones to help remove mold from your basement. Further down the article we review some of the features for our top pick – EcoSeb DD122EA-SIMPLE Desiccant Dehumidifier.

The images below are all clickable links that will take you to the product listing on Once you are there you can explore other product listings as well. These images include the dehumidifier we review in this article and two others that are also desiccant dehumidifiers.

Moisture can also leak in through the walls of your basement. If your home is situated at the bottom of a hill this is very common. Rainwater will soak into the hill and gradually flow down with gravity. As the water moves through the soil it will run into the side of your basement. Over time this water seeps through the walls.

Dehumidifiers that rely on compressors do not function very efficiently in colder environments like the basement. Compressor dehumidifiers have peak efficiency around 68 degrees F. If you need your dehumidifier to work well in the cold, look for one that is a desiccant dehumidifier. They will function all the way down to 34 degrees F.

Desiccant dehumidifiers use small wheels or discs with silica gel to remove moisture from the air. They continuously regenerate the silica gel with slightly heated air so that you do not need to replace the silica gel. Another advantage desiccant dehumidifiers have over compressor dehumidifiers is that they can run very quietly. They only use a fan, which does not make as much noise as a compressor will.

Compressor dehumidifiers use a compressor to cool down metal coils. This is the same idea as condensation on the outside of a glass of ice water. This condensed water from the air falls into the tank or gets drained by a hose. The problem with compressor humidifiers is that if the air is already cold, they will struggle to cool their coils enough to cause condensation. This is why we recommend using a desiccant dehumidifier to help remove mold from your basement. Water damage restoration professionals rely on commercial grade desiccant dehumidifiers for this same reason.

Below we review some of the functions and capabilities of the EcoSeb DD122EA-SIMPLE dehumidifier.

Operating Temperature Range

DD122EA-SIMPLE operating temperature range is 34 to 95 degrees F. Compressor based dehumidifiers have a peak efficiency of 68 degrees F. If you need the dehumidifier to work in a place with temperatures lower than that, the desiccant dehumidifier is the best choice. It is sufficient for most of the operations, and thus it makes the design one of the best suited for diverse applications.

Though there is no digital display for showing the readings of the humidistat, similar to what you get on a compressor based unit. But, the design comes with a built-in humidistat. You can buy a separate hygrometer unit, to measure the humidity in the room, else you can also reply on the dehumidifier set to do the work without any need to measure it.

The EcoSeb DD122EA-SIMPLE can be set to a relative humidity range of 40% to 80%. It is done by manually adjusting the knob and works fine.

Number of Fan Speeds

Usually, the compressor based units come with two fans setting, high and low. It helps in controlling the noise due to fan operation, higher the fan speed more will be noise, the choice is to the customer if they are ready to adjust their dehumidification needs in exchange for quite an operation. Though in case of EcoSeb DD122EA-SIMPLE one cannot directly regulate the fan speeds, the operation logic does use the feature of automatically adjusting the fan speed as per the operational needs.

Extra Modes

The unit EcoSeb DD122EA-SIMPLE has relatively simple control consisting of one adjustable dial knob and one selection adjustor switch.

Laundry mode

The unit is equipped with a continuous mode-called laundry mode, in which the unit will not shut off, irrespective of what the humidistat reads as the ambient air’s humidity level. The unit will shut only when the water collection bucket is full, that has the switch to turn off the dehumidifier unit.

The DD122EA-SIMPLE also has the provision of multiple auto modes of low, medium and high settings.

Economy/Turbo Modes

In DD122EA-SIMPLE you can set the unit to the economy or the turbo mode. This can be done by operating the switch on the control panel. The economy mode is for low power consumption, in which the low fan speed is used. In turbo mode, the dehumidification shall be achieved to the desired level faster due to higher fan speed, but you will have to face higher energy bills and more noise levels.

Energy Efficiency

As per the mode selected by the user, the DD122EA-SIMPLE consumes from 300 to 615 watts power. The power consumption in high, dry or the turbo mode can be as high as 615 watts. This comparable to the compressor based units, which consumes 300-400 watts with low capacity designs of 30 to 40 pint. The bigger units can consume power up to as high as 700-800 watts.

Moisture Removal

The DD122EA-SIMPLE units have many modes to achieve different humidity levels as low, medium and high. The same can also be obtained at various speeds by selecting the economy or the turbo modes.

DD122EA-SIMPLE is easily portable. This is one significant advantage compared to the compressor based units that are heavy as they consist of heavy parts like compressor, condenser and the evaporator. The desiccant design, similar to the DD122EA-SIMPLE, has lighter parts. The unit weighs only 13.2 pounds. The compressor-based unit of similar operation capacity will weigh as much as 30-50 pounds. If you have to move quite often, then DD122EA-SIMPLE is the best choice for you.

Warranty (Manufacturers)

The DD122EA-SIMPLE has two years manufacturer’s warranty. This is better than the compressor based units that come with one year warranty. Extra warranty of any covers typically only the compressor.

The DD122EA-SIMPLE is one of the cheapest in the range. Its price comes somewhere between the cost of 30 to 50-pint compressor based designs. But, looking at the versatility of DD122EA-SIMPLE it is the best value for money.

Due to its time-tested and rugged designs, with minimum electronics, the design of DD122EA-SIMPLE works fine for the long duration of operations.

Best Mini Split Heat Pump for Cold Weather

There are a lot of different numbers and measurements to consider when looking for the best mini split system for heating in cold weather. In the first part of this article we talk about a few of these numbers. Later we go over two very similar mini split heat pump product lines.

The first two, Air-Con and Senville, arereasonably efficient with SEER ratings over 20. The next system we review in this article is the Pioneer Ductless Wall Mount Mini Split System which is capable of providing optimal heating and cooling for you indoor space in outdoor temperatures as low as 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

Next, we dive into the Mitsubishi MSZ-FH06NA which is one of the best mini split systems for extreme cold weather. It has the highest Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) rating of any model we review on this page. We explain HSPF a little further down the page. Click here to be taken to the section on Mitsubishi mini split heat pumps.

The last section of this article has a number of tips and tricks to improve your experience with a mini split heat pump. These focus on general principles to use when installing both the indoor and outdoor units for your mini split. The best tip is a practical solution to prevent your base pan from icing up in extremely cold weather. For now, let’s check out a few numbers to consider when deciding on the mini split system that fits your needs.

SEER Rating

SEER is seasonal energy efficiency ratio. It is an easy way to compare between mini split systems that have different voltages, BTUs and designs for different sized rooms. The higher the SEER the more efficient the system. Some other factors like how many square feet the mini split can heat or cool may be more important for you. For more information about SEER and how it is calculated, check out this article. As you consider different mini split heat pumps to keep you warm through the winter the SEER rating is an important thing to be aware of. Having a high SEER rating is important it you want to keep your energy bills as low as possible. Any rating above 20 is on the high end of the efficiency scale.

HSPF and Mini Splits

HSPF means Heating Seasonal Performance Factor and it is important to consider if you are using your mini split for heating. It measures the heating efficiency of a mini split heat pump and allows you to easily compare this feature between different manufacturers. notes that an HSPF over 12.0 does very well in cold weather.

AHRI Certified

AHRI certification is another important thing to look for when you consider different heat pump systems for your heating and cooling needs. AHRI stands for Air-conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Institute. They have been recognized by the ENERGY STAR program as a certifying body. The AHRI is able to certify appliances and machines as being in compliance with efficiency standards. The AHRI certification is recognized by agencies in the United States and Canada, you can read more about it here if you like. AHRI certification is another way to compare between mini split heating and cooling systems. We recommend using this as a pass-fail test, meaning if the mini split does not have the certification, do not consider purchasing it.

Air-Con Ductless Mini Split Heat Pumps

Air-Con has an extensive lineup of ductless heating and cooling systems. All the units we found in our research use GMCC Toshiba compressors. These compressors are fixed speed compressors. They are generally less expensive than variable speed compressors like those found in Mitsubishi mini split systems but they are also less efficient.

Air-Con mini split systems use the R-410A refrigerant, which is important for two reasons:

  1. R-410A refrigerant contributes to higher SEER ratings that keep your energy costs lower
  2. R-410A refrigerant does not deplete the ozone. This means you can expect to be able to recharge your mini split without worrying about the refrigerant being phased out due to environmental concerns. This phase out process happened with ozone depleting refrigerants.

Senville AURA

Senville makes mini split systems available in both the U.S. and Canada. All of their units in the AURA series have a SEER rating over 20. The smallest unit at 9,000 BTUs is rated for a space up to 500 square feet. Their large 24,000 BTU mini split is rated for up to 1,500 square feet and still has a SEER rating of 20. This is a very efficient and powerful heating and cooling system. The high SEER rating is in part due to the R-410A refrigerant we discussed earlier in the article. Senville AURA units are able to provide heat all the way down to -5 degrees Fahrenheit. compressor

Pioneer Air Conditioner & Heat Pumps

Pioneer designs some of their mini split systems with auxiliary electric heaters. There heaters are part of the outdoor portion of the unit and allow the units to provide optimal heat in temperatures as low as 5 degrees Fahrenheit. The units can still provide heat in colder outdoor temperatures. However, automatic safety measures to protect the unit will kick in and reduce the efficiency of the unit.

Pioneer’s more popular units range in SEER rating from 16 up to 18. Their most popular model is the 12000 BTU 230V mini split. Here is a text link to be taken to the PIONEER Air Conditioner Inverter+ Ductless Wall Mount Mini Split System Air Conditioner & Heat Pump Full Set, 12000 BTU 230V on Amazon.

The full system consists of the indoor unit and the compressor which is installed outdoors. The digital remote control allows you to select any of the four modes of operation; heating, cooling, ventilation or dehumidification.

Additionally, an on board computer provides automatic operation. The timer feature allows you to stop or start the system at particular times. The night-mode feature is especially useful. It changes the temperature automatically at night when you may want your room cooler.

In the event of a power outage the auto-restart feature uses the data in its memory to restart the system with the same settings.

It is also possible to remotely control and monitor this system through Wi-fi. This is a great feature to have if you are using this mini split heat pump to keep an outbuilding warm during the winter to prevent damage from frozen pipes.

Mitsubishi MSZ-FH06NA

This mini split is the most powerful mini split system we review on this page. Mitsubishi designs their mini splits for extreme cold. Some of their units, like the MSZ-FH06NA come with a base pan heater already installed. This allows the unit to operate in outdoor ambient temperatures as low as -13 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you check out the installation tips further down the page you’ll understand why a base pan heater is an important feature to have. Additionally, this model comes in at an HSPF of 12.5. At 5 degrees Fahrenheit it is capable of producing 10,900 BTUs of heat.

The MSZ-FH06NA has a SEER rating of 30.5 and is capable of removing 0.6 pints of water from the air every hour. These numbers are more important to be aware of if you will also be using your mini split for cooling in the summer. says the following about HSPF

Efficiency Maine, having installed over 10,000 ductless mini-split heat pumps to provide heat during harsh winters, requires single head units with a Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF)  of over 12.0 BTU/Wh and found them to work extremely well

Other outstanding features of the MSZ-FH06NA include air filters to reduce particulate and gaseous indoor air pollutants. The MAC-2300FT Anti-allergy enzyme filter and the MAC-3000FT-E Platinum Deodorizing Filter are both washable and can be purchased separately if you ever do need a replacement.

The compressors Mitsubishi uses in their mini split systems are variable speed compressors. This allows them to heat and cool over a range of temperatures without needing to entirely shut down the compressor. The most energy intensive time in the operation of a motor is at startup. When compared to the fixed speed compressors that come standard in less expensive mini split systems, the variable speed compressors are much more efficient.

Pioneer WYS012-17 Ductless Wall Mount Mini Split

Air-Con Ductless Mini Split Heat Pump System

Senville SENL-18CD Split Air Conditioner and Heat Pump

Mitsubishi MZ-GL12NA Ductless Split System

The remainder of this article is filled with tips and tricks that can improve your experience with a mini split heat pump. These focus on general principles to use when installing both the indoor and outdoor units for your mini split. We start with choosing the best place to install the outdoor portion, or compressor unit, of your mini split heat pump.

Tips for Installing a Mini Split Compressor Unit

Make sure your mini split has some overhead cover to keep snow from accumulating on top of the unit. If snow does accumulate around it, the compressor will still continue to function but at a reduced capacity. However, the snow can eventually built up enough and combine with the water produced by the compressor to prevent it from functioning.

Use most, if not all of the refrigerant piping that comes with the unit. The compressor unit makes noise and vibration. Installing the compressor unit further away from the space you are heating will reduce intensity of the noise and vibration that you will hear. Pay special attention to the manufacturer’s specifications if you decide to use longer lines. A longer line will decrease the efficiency of the unit.

Do I need a Wind Baffle for my Mini Split System?

It depends. The wind baffle protects the fan in the compressor unit from very strong winds. If you know you have predictably strong winds in your area it is possible to simply install the unit at a 90 degree angle to the direction of the wind.

One of the secondary benefits of using a wind baffle is that it presents a more uniform appearance to the exterior of the building than a mini split system. If you decide to build your own, be sure to check the manufacturer’s recommendations on how far away from the nearest obstruction you need to install the mini split.

Ground Clearance

Additionally, we recommend placing the unit at least two feet off the ground. This will not only save your back when it comes time to service the unit, it will also keep the unit (mostly) out of drifting snow. The extra water coming off the compressor unit will also need a place to fall and freeze in very cold weather. Over a season the ice can build up. Make sure to keep this away from the base pan of your mini split. Speaking of base pans…

How to Keep a Mini Split Base Pan from Icing up

If you are using your mini split system in cold weather, consider a base pan heater, especially if it does not come with one installed on it from the manufacturer.

This is very important since the compressor will produce excess water while heating. This water can freeze and eventually build up enough to shut down your mini split system. Additionally, these base pan heaters allow the compressor to operate at very cold temperatures.

There are a few shown below that are made by refrigeration appliance companies. However, some of the require 230 volts which can make things complicated since not all mini split systems even require that much voltage.

An easier solution would be to use a rain gutter de-icing cable that is secured to your base pan. The gutter de-icing cable can be a lot more affordable than a base pan designed specifically for your mini split. It will take a little ingenuity to get it positioned correctly and you will need another outlet if you decide to go this route.

Keep in mind that this is not how mini split systems are designed. This is simply a common sense recommendation. Proceed at your own risk.

Tip for Installing the Heating and Cooling Unit of a Mini Split

If the primary use for your mini split will be heating try to install the indoor unit about 18 inches off the floor. At this height the unit will intake the coldest air in the room and heat it up. This will also produce heat at a low point in the room. Since the hot air will rise you can gain a small amount of efficiency with this setup.

The main downside to installing the indoor portion of your mini split this low is that the drain pipe may not have a good downward angle. Be sure to check where the drain pipe will be on the exterior of your structure before deciding on the indoor installation.

Of course, you can still install the unit near the ceiling and aim the ventilation fins downward. There should be no concerns with the drain pipe in this more traditional setup. The only downside is that it will not be heating the coldest air in the room.

Humidifier vs Nebulizer

This post talks about nebulizers for medical applications like using asthma medication. If you are looking for information about nebulizers that work with essential oils, check out this article.

Humidifiers and nebulizers have a short list of similarities. Humidifiers help add moisture to the air in your home or office. Nebulizers are used to administer medication. has a pretty good description of how to use and clean a nebulizer. The medication used in nebulizers will be prescribed by a doctor. First we provide a short list of uses for humidifiers. Further down the page we give a quick overview of nebulizers, how they function and their uses. All the way at the bottom we go over a few ways that these two devices are similar to each other.

People have a lot of different reasons they use humidifiers.

Vick’s is one of the most well known humidifier manufacturers. They have a strong line up of humidifiers that are useful for any of the reasons we listed above. We have included a functional search bar in the ad below. It has been prefilled with a search term to show products relevant to the content on this page.

People use nebulizers to deliver inhaled medications. The most common use for these medications is to relieve asthma symptoms. For small children, they are much easier to use than pocket sized inhalers. Another advantage they can have over the pocket sized inhalers is that they can deliver more than one medicine at a time. Adults with very severe asthma may use nebulizers as well.

There is not an exhaustive list of uses for nebulizers. They are used to turn liquid medicines into a vapor you can inhale. That’s it!

Nebulizers come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Smaller, battery powered nebulizers are portable and easy to transport. Others need to be plugged into an outlet on the wall and set up on a table. They work by compressing air and moving that compressed air through the liquid medication. This process turns the liquid into a mist that can be inhaled. Humidifiers may rely on evaporation, use ultrasonic vibrations or heat to turn the water in their tanks into a mist.

The main difference here is that humidifiers need to turn water into a mist and nebulizers are doing the same to a medication. Different asthma medication may have very different properties that do not allow them to be turned into a mist the same way that water can.

If you look back to the list of reasons use humidifiers you may notice that asthma is on that list too. Very dry air can exacerbate asthma symptoms. You can fix this in a number of ways by using whole house humidifiers or a humidifier designed to treat a single room. There’s also the option of using a personal humidifier.

Personal humidifiers come with a mask-like attachment that helps contain the steam so the user can easily breathe it in. A nebulizer without medication in it would function in a similar manner.

Humidifiers vs Nebulizers

This article named some differences and similarities between nebulizers and humidifiers. Best Range Hood for a Gas Stove

Keeping a kitchen looking clean and refreshed can be a difficult task. Not only does the kitchen get a lot of traffic in a household, it also suffers from a lot of different inputs.

Maintaining the air quality in a kitchen, be it from smells, grease, or cleaning chemicals requires extra effort.

Even with the best range hood installed to specifications and running whenever the stove is on, build up happens. Many cooks don’t want to think of how much worse it would be without a hood pushing irritants out of the way.

You’ll find a number of range hoods for sale on the market. If you want to upgrade a hood or install one in a new home, you should check out these reviews. We’ll help you find a unit that will look great and work great for you.

No review does its job without laying out its terms and metrics. The following features demonstrate the key components and functions of the best range hoods for gas stoves.

Read through these terms if you are unfamiliar so you understand the breakdown given in each hood’s review.

CFM Levels

When you remove all of the niceties, a hood is mostly a large fan. This is a simplistic way to look at the device, but it helps you to focus on the main feature needed: power.

You measure the power of a hood in CFM or cubic feet per minute. That is how much air the fan can move over time. A larger CFM means more irritants get swept out before spreading around the kitchen.

Be cautioned, a lot of power often comes with a trade-off in sound and size. Like in many other places in life, it isn’t the power to do it, it is the power to do it well.

Ducted/Vented Systems

No matter the size or the power of a hood, the irritants have to go somewhere. Ducts and vents bridge the gap between the hood and the outside world.

Wall mounted hoods usually have a shorter distance to reach before connecting with the outside. Island mounts have to move more air a farther distance, so they need to be more powerful.

Remember, as well, that a longer duct has more surface area for irritants to bind to over time. This delays the time before issues with cleaning develop.

Always be aware of what other devices you may have on your roof when installing a duct. You don’t want to recirculate your kitchen exhaust into other areas.

Ductless or Recirculated Systems

When the area between the kitchen range and the outside world is not traversable, a ductless system can be used. For larger multi-unit buildings, this may be the likely case.

Instead of sending the air outside, these systems move their air through a loop and catch the irritants in filters.

Some systems offer convertible options between ducted and ductless. These may be installed for a number of reasons but combine a closed system with an outside vent. A switch controls the opening to the outside.

Hoods use filters to capture irritants and lower the amount of residue that gets trapped in ducts or recycled back into the kitchen. Most systems use some form of filter whether ductless or ducted.

While a filter on a ducted system makes for easier cleaning and longevity, a ductless system is practically pointless without one.

Filters come in two general varieties. You can find charcoal filters that dissipate smells and capture irritants. These need to be replaced frequently but are cheap and work well.

Aluminum filters can be cleaned and reinstalled. They also tend to be more pricey and less good at trapping smells. aluminum filters get placed in ducted systems more commonly than ductless.

Like any other fan system in the house, a hood puts out an amount of noise. The more power and the closer the hood is to the range, the more sound it will put out. Ducted systems tend to be quieter.

Ductless systems have two places where sound can come through at the opening and the end of the loop.

The market puts out more hood design and placement options than will be listed here. Many of the expanded options come from customization, which is always great if you can afford it. However, we will just address the most common and useful out of the box locations.

Under Cabinet

The most common hood placement attaches under a cabinet above the range. This placement often gives a more uniform aesthetic with the cupboards and conceals most of the mechanism.

Nearly identical to the under cabinet placement, wall-mount rests under the cupboards but attaches to the wall. A wall-mount can leave the cabinets above accessible.

You find this placement option most commonly over island ranges. The aesthetic, when placed against a wall, requires moving cabinets to accommodate the size.

A flue stretches over the range. These often stainless steel stove hoods provide a power-user or serious home chef look.

The most common extra features come in the form of lighting options and control schemes. Lighting options should provide enough light without causing too much glare.

Lighting setups may use bulbs or LED. Be careful that bulb changing isn’t too difficult. Sometimes bulbs are placed in housings that require half the unit to be taken apart to access.

Control options can be a touchpad or more analog buttons. Touchpads start out seeming nice, but they can get sticky over time which makes them difficult to use. It is recommended to wipe those down with each use to prevent build up. Analog buttons can get jammed for the same reason so interface clean-up remains important in both cases.

Best Range Hood Quick Looks

Now that you have the basics, we’ll go over the top-rated range hoods for a variety of positions and needs.

Each of these units comes from a company that ranks among the best range hood brands. The quality and craftsmanship aren’t in question, but finding exactly what you need for your kitchen still takes some decision making.

1. AKDY 30″ AZ63175S Touch Panel Control Range

This wall-mount unit provides a chimney aesthetic and first-class power. With 400 CFM pulling irritants out of the kitchen, you will breathe easy.

The stainless steel construction is easy to wipe down and keep clean while also doing a good job in not showing grease over time.

this is one of the quietest hoods out there with only 65dB of noise. Part of this quiet running comes from the Teflon coated blades of the fan system. These both cut through the air with little resistance but also wick grease away, leaving them able to function for a long time without breaking down.

In the extra features category, this hood gives a 3-speed control system on an LED panel. Touch controls also provide bright low-glare lighting for your cooking efforts.

2. Golden Vantage Euro-Style Island Mount Range Hood

This quality offering from Golden Vantage shares many of the features of the AKDY. You will find the same 400 CFM power working to clean up your air. As an island mount chimney that will take care of smells from an air frier.

The sound stays quiet at 65dB. the wattage is less efficient than found in the AKDY model. It takes nearly 30% more power. Part of this comes from the number of bulbs which offer excellent lighting. The more open area of an island often requires more light.

A standard aluminum mesh filter can be replaced if going ductless. Again, this option has separately sold components and includes a carbon filter. When you check for prices keep in mind that this unit also has a 3-year warranty compared to most models offering a single year.

The baffle filters on this unit make for quick clean up and grease removal. The push button controls have a satisfying click that moves you through the 3-speeds of the fan and the lighting range.

3. Broan 413004 Under-Cabinet Range Hood

For a best in show and useful for the most situations option, the Broan 413004 gets the job done. It also runs at the lower end with only 120 V of power including the 75 W bulb (installed separately).

This ductless unit mounts under cabinets and leaves the cabinet accessible. A champion in recirculation with a grease-charcoal filter unmatched in the industry. The sound comes in under 40dB but it does sound louder from the stereo effect.

The fan runs at 2-speeds controlled from a nested push button. This nested mounting of the buttons goes overlooked for its simplicity.

By moving the buttons above the lip of the hood, Broan managed to take one of the more annoying elements of a range hood out of the equation. Buttons don’t work well when they get gunked up and this keeps them away from that gunk.

This unit is economical, which you’ll see from the price point. The major drawback of the system comes from the lower range 170 CFM. This is adequate for one or two burners but you may find yourself looking for extra fans and an open window if making a huge meal.

4. Kitchen Bath Collection Wall-Mounted Kitchen Range Hood

Where to start with the STL75-LED model from Kitchen Bath Collection? This unit comes with so many high-end features and options that it can seem to be too much for average needs.

The power usage stacks up with a 193 W motor. For that juice, it offers 400 CFM in air purging power. It also manages to do that at between 48 and 58DB in sound.

On top of those already top of the line features, it is convertible out of the box. This unit is designed to be ducted or ductless with no extra kits or external purchases necessary. Well, almost no additional purchases.

When running the unit in the ductless mode you will need to get some charcoal filters to attach in the easy to access baffles. When not using the charcoal filters it comes with a reusable dishwasher safe filter for ducted mode.

The LED in the model number is there for a reason. You will be amazed at how much more light their 98 bulbs LED configuration can cast. Other companies max out between 30 and 60 bulbs.

We’ve mentioned the extra filters, but look out when pricing packages, some offers come with these additional filters.

5. Tatsumaki 30″ TA-400 Range Hood

Our final entry in the best hoods category is the Tatsumaki TA-400. This unit provides something few others have considered, self-cleaning.

A water reservoir in the unit can be activated to run a 38-second cleaning protocol. This splashes out grease on the internal fan blades. This also removes persistent odors and dust from the unit if it hasn’t been used in a while.

One of the ways that the unit will keep cleaning from even being necessary is its whopping 750 CFM. This maxed out setting at the top of the 6-speed fan control hits irritants hard and fast.

When comparing prices remember that this unit has a 2-year warranty. It is sometimes described as a drop0in unit which means under the cabinet.

The auto off feature from the touchpad can be surprisingly nice. Leaving on a fan to clear up some remaining smells while plating often means forgetting to go back and using up more power than necessary.
