Coleman Camping Stoves

Coleman has a long track record of making camping stoves you can rely on to improve your outdoor experience. In this article we compare two of their top models – the Classic and the Triton, a match lit stove.

We chose the Triton out of Coleman’s match lighted stoves to compare to the Coleman Classic because it is the most similar in size and features. There are two other Coleman match light stoves but they only have a single burner. They include:

The Coleman Perfect Flow Grill Stove, which is a single burner unit with 130 square inches of grilling space. This stove is much smaller than the ones we review in more detail on this page.

The single burner Coleman Powerpack Propane Stove has no wind guards and only makes 7,500 BTUs on the highest output setting. The categories where it really shines are the weight and the size.

Coming in at a featherweight 2.2 pounds makes it one of the lightest camping stoves out there. Additionally, the small 12.5 x 13.4 x 4 inch size makes it incredibly space conscious.

Dimensions

The Coleman Triton is 5.8 x 23.1 x 13.9 inches while Coleman Classic is slightly smaller in all dimensions at 4.1 x 21.9 x 13.7 inches.

At first glance these look pretty similar in size. However, there is actually a 33% difference in size between the two. The Triton is 1.078 cubic feet while the Coleman Classic is much smaller at 0.712 cubic feet.

BTUs and Cooking

Here we see the space and weight savings of the Coleman Classic giving a slight disadvantage when it comes to heat output. The Coleman Classic has two 10,000 BTU burners while the Triton cranks out 11,000 BTUs on each of its burners.

Unfortunately there is no clear winner here. The Coleman Classic offers a 33% smaller size while the Triton has a 10% advantage when it comes to output.

Assuming you do not need to heat large quantities of water, we recommend the Classic because of its weight savings. With this recommendation we are also assuming that you will be using lighter and thinner pans on your stove that will transfer heat well and reduce the overall weight of your pack.

Dimensions

Camp Chef Teton is an excellent choice if space is a concern. If you are trying to fit a stove in your pack or in your vehicle the Teton is one of the more compact two burner camp stoves on the market today.

The Teton measures 21.5 x 12.5 x 4 inches while the Everest is slightly larger and measures 23.5 x 13.5 x 4 inches.

This space can be valuable if you are packing for a multi-day trip, especially if you need to carry it on your back. In that scenario the other big consideration will be weight.

Weight

Camp Chef Teton really shines in this category coming in at a featherweight 9.6 pounds. The Everest stove weighs 12 pounds. The weight difference between the two stoves is significant if you are planning on covering any significant distance or changes in elevation.

If you are keen on portability, the Camp Chef Teton will be your perfect choice while those who are looking for excellent cooking capability will settle on the Everest stove. As we point out in the next section of this article the trade off in weight comes at a price when it comes to BTU output.

BTUs

Camp Chef Teton stove is powered by two 10,000 BTU burners while the Everest stove can crank out 20,000 BTUs from each of its burners.

This is where the big trade off really comes in. Most of the other features between these two stoves have been pretty close so far. Having half the BTUs can add a lot of time if you need to boil water.

The Everest stove can withstand strong winds when cooking with its flame not becoming extinguished compared to the Camp Chef stove due to the high pressure in the emission of cooking gas.

What Are the Different Types of Humidifiers?

There are many different types of humidifiers, but they can be grouped into one of two main categories: Cool mist and warm mist humidifiers. While they sound like polar-opposites that would result in very different outcomes, the reality is that they do the exact same job.

By the time moisture from the humidifier reaches your nose, it is already at, or near, room temperature, regardless of what condition it was in when it left the machine.

So, the choice really comes down to a matter of safety: Humidifiers that produce warm mist can pose a mild risk of burning to infants and small children, due to the heat they put off when processing the water.


Let’s take a look at the subcategories of humidifiers on a deeper level:

Cool mist humidifiers

The four most common types of cool mist humidifiers on the market are ultrasonic, evaporative, air washer and impeller. The most quiet of the three is usually the ultrasonic model, as it does away with the traditional internal fan and uses a vibrating nebulizer instead. Evaporative models tend to be noisier, by comparison. These models blow air over a wet wick, and as expected, this produces some sound effects.

An impeller humidifier breaks water into fine droplets by flinging water at a diffuser with a rotating disc. Sounds a bit crude, but these types of humidifiers get the job done well. The mist produced by these humidifiers tends to be more fog-like.

Rotating discs in an air washer humidifier help to remove airborne impurities, such as pollen particles and dust. While this doesn’t necessarily replace a quality air purifier, it can significantly improve the cleanliness of the humidified air coming your way.

All four of the above mentioned cool mist humidifiers are hard-workers, and they do an effective job at raising the moisture levels in your home or office to alleviate some of the symptoms of allergies.

Warm mist humidifiers

These are your more “traditional” consoles that emit steam produced from heating water to a boil. A common name for one of these types is the steam vaporizer. Some people refer to these as being different from humidifiers, but in reality, a vaporizer is essentially the same thing as a humidifier. These models are also relatively quiet, just producing the occasional hissing or steaming sound in the background.

During the winter months, the idea of having a machine produce warm mist can seem appealing. As we pointed out earlier, the temperature of the mist as it leaves the machine will quickly adjust to room temperature, so the result is the same.

One of the benefits and advantages of a warm mist humidifier is that they often have mineral filters to trap tiny deposits in the water. If you’ve wondered: “Can you use tap water with a humidifier?” the answer is that you shouldn’t, but a steam vaporizer with a mineral filter can help in the event that you do.

What is the best type of water to use in a humidifier? You should use demineralized or distilled water to help prevent bacterial growth (as well as the risk of breathing in airborne minerals dispersed from the machine).

To avoid the burns, care must be taken to place these devices out of contact with children. Warm mist humidifiers also come in an ultrasonic option, with some machines having a “cool mist” feature that doesn’t heat the water prior to it leaving the machine, meaning that the mist will be a friendly 50 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Below, we’ll cover some of the perks and compromises of each type to answer the common question: “Is cool mist or warm mist better?”

  • Steam Vaporizers – Pros: When used in normal mode (not cool mist) it obliterates bacteria with heat, fairly quiet, can be used with inhalants for respiratory treatments. Cons: Risk of burning, difficult to clean, uses a lot of energy

What Can a Brass Wok Be Used For?

A Thai brass wok can be used to accommodate many different styles of cooking. Some of these cooking styles are as follows:

Stir Frying

The cooking style which is most commonly associated with the wok is stir-frying. Stir-frying is a style of cooking which involves heating and repeatedly stirring vegetables and meats in exceedingly hot oils.

When stir frying with a brass wok, it’s recommended that you heat the wok up before getting started. Ideally, the wok will be so hot that a drop of water will sizzle and evaporate the second that it makes contact.

Then, pour oils, meats, and veggies into the wok, and then stir them until they are browned and crispy. If smoke is billowing in your face throughout the entire process, the heat is too high.

Steaming

You can also utilize a wok when steaming food, placing the steamer on top of water within the wok.

When doing so, make sure to boil water in your wok before placing the steamer. Then, after water has been boiled, place your desired food inside of the steamer.

Be very careful with the food as you insert and replace it. The steam created in this process can be very hot, and can cause severe burns to your skin.

Smoking

Due to their depth, woks are more than capable of smoking food. To smoke with a wok, it’s recommended that you first cover its surface with aluminum foil.

After foil has been placed, put sugar, tea leaves, and other small foods on top of it. Then, place a wire tray on top of the wok. This will act as a surface for the food which you’re preparing.

As the wok is being heated, sugar and tea leaf-infused smoke will billow up into food that you’re preparing, giving it a flavor that you just can’t get with other cooking methods.

Deep-frying

Because of their unique shape, woks accommodate deep-frying better than the majority of other pans. The fact that woks slope so quickly at their bottoms means that they can deep fry foods with very small amounts of oil.

Nonetheless, you can deep fry a variety of different foods in the same wok at one time. The larger the diameter of your wok, the more foods it will be able to deep-fry at one time.

When deep-frying, be careful not to use too much oil. Generally, you don’t want to fill the wok to any more than half its height.

Caring for a Brass Wok

For the most part, brass cookware exists just fine on its own. However, if such cookware is left wet or dirty for prolonged periods of time, it can take on a dark green substance known as verdigris. Verdigris is not only unsightly, but potentially toxic as well, capable of making you very sick if ingested.

It’s for this reason that, if your brass wok takes on verdigris, you must give it a good scrub-down. Generally, an acidic substance such as vinegar or lemon juice can be used to remove verdigris. Scrub your wok with these substances until all traces of verdigris have disappeared.
