The United States Department of Energy is responsible for setting the standards for both the HEPA filter and handling nuclear material. It’s good to know that cleaning your home is getting this high level of attention.
Not all Hepa vacuum cleaners are the same however so if you are in the market for a new vacuum cleaner you need this guide.
Read on to learn about the best upright vacuum cleaner with a Hepa filter.
What is a HEPA filter?
Anything with holes that can trap some particles and let others through is a filter. By this definition, a sieve is a filter. Some vacuum cleaners use filters that catch larger particles but not very small ones.
These vacuum cleaners are essentially moving fine dust around your home. They can increase their effectiveness by laying one filter on top of another and catching more particles but they then get clogged up quickly. Having to pull air through a clogged filter takes more energy and a more powerful motor.
HEPA filters work in a different way. They use an outer filter to clean larger particles such as hair and dirt. Inside a concertina filter made of glass fibers removes smaller particles.
Some particles are simply trapped by the fibers, other catch onto the fibers as they pass through and yet more float about and stick to the fibers. For this reason, a HEPA vacuum cleaner needs to have the filter changed regularly if it is to keep working. Factor this into your buying decision.
Two of the Best Vacuum Cleaners Head to Head
Dyson Animal 2
This wide vacuum cleaner covers the ground quickly but without the problem of back-breaking weight. It uses a ball rather than wheels to get about. Very maneuverable.
This is not the most adjustable of cleaners but why would you want to change settings when it does such a good job on the standard setting. Use it on carpet or hard floor by turning the brush off or on. No problems.
If you are concerned about allergies, you’ll be pleased to learn that the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America certifies the Dyson Animal 2. It uses “whole-machine HEPA filtration. Be aware that when emptying the “bagless” bin you may be exposed to the dust as it is not sealed.

Miele Maverick U1
The Miele Maverick U1 offers complete HEPA filtration including tiny particles such as pollen. Great if you have allergies or asthma. What’s more, the sealed waste bag means once the particles are trapped they stay trapped, even when emptying the waste.
The roller brush adjusts automatically and is great for pet hair and anything that clings to the carpet. A foot level switch adjusts the vacuum for the transition between carpet and hard floors. You can even turn the brush off for delicate floors.
This vacuum is a little heavier than others but the swivel neck makes maneuvering easy. You might find moving it around it more difficult. The 39-foot cord means you don’t have to keep unplugging and re-plugging.
The Best Upright Vacuum with a HEPA Filter
These are both great vacuum cleaners. It’s difficult to separate them. It depends what is important to you.
